What is a steam trap?
A steam trap is an automatic valve installed on a system fed by a steam boiler. Its job is to discharge condensate — the steam that, after giving up its heat, has turned back into water — along with air and non-condensable gases, while preventing live steam from escaping. It ensures that only condensed water, not useful steam, leaves the circuit.
Why does the trap drive efficiency?
Accumulated condensate reduces the surface available for heat transfer and can cause damaging water hammer. Trapped air likewise acts as an insulator that slows heat exchange. By discharging both at the right moment, the trap maintains system efficiency and protects the heat exchanger and other equipment.
How are steam traps maintained?
A trap stuck open wastes steam and inflates energy bills; stuck closed, it floods the system with condensate. Periodic surveys of trap condition, built into a preventive maintenance program, catch failures early. Suitable water treatment also limits the corrosion and scaling that accelerate trap wear.
