The ability of a burner or boiler to continuously adjust its output to the heating demand, instead of running in a simple on/off manner.
What is modulation in heating?
Modulation is the ability of a gas burner or boiler to continuously adjust its output, between a minimum and a maximum, to follow the building’s actual demand. It contrasts with on/off operation, where the equipment alternates between full fire and complete shutdown.
Why does modulation matter for efficiency?
By matching the real load, a modulating burner reduces the number of start-and-stop cycles — these short cycles waste energy and stress components. Adjusted output also keeps the heat exchanger at a more stable temperature, which limits swings and improves seasonal efficiency.
Modulation and condensing boilers
Modulation is especially valuable on a condensing boiler: at reduced output, return-water temperatures fall, which promotes flue-gas condensation and the intended efficiency gain. The exact modulation range and its settings must remain consistent with the manufacturer’s instructions and the building’s needs.
