What is carbon monoxide?
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a toxic, colorless and odorless gas produced by the incomplete combustion of carbon-based fuels, including natural gas. Unlike the carbon dioxide from complete combustion, CO forms when the reaction lacks air or the flame is poorly tuned. Its lack of odor and color makes it undetectable by human senses.
Why does CO pose a life-threatening danger?
Once inhaled, carbon monoxide binds to the blood’s hemoglobin with a much stronger affinity than oxygen, reducing oxygen delivery to the organs. Because poisoning can progress without any perceptible sign, a faulty gas appliance in a confined space is a serious hazard to a building’s occupants.
How is the carbon monoxide risk controlled?
